Frank Benischeck, founder of Totus Tuus Consulting, a St. Augustine, Florida-based retirement and legacy planning firm, was featured on The Florida Times Union website on Tuesday, May 7.
Here’s an excerpt of Frank’s commentary, entitled “Don’t Accidentally Disinherit Your Family”:
“If you woke up this morning and found your IRA is going to your ex-spouse, you’re are not alone.
“Several years ago I was meeting with a couple who had been married for many years. As part of our normal review process we have our attorney go over our clients legal documents as a courtesy. As I was visiting with our clients, I asked them to find the beneficiary designation for one of their accounts. What a surprise! His ex-spouse was the beneficiary. Needless to say, the battle of Gettysburg seemed like a stroll on the beach compared to the battle that ensued.”
